Trying hard to fall asleep but still can’t? It could be Insomnia. Even waking up in the middle of the night is a symptom of Insomnia. As much as it is a common problem, it needs to be fixed. Reasons could range from stress – to the kind of environment you sleep in. So, to be able to sleep through the night, identify the problem and try the relevant remedy as given below:
Go to bed only when you feel like
If you can’t sleep at bedtime, relax by doing something that will help you unwind.
Set a calming bedtime routine
Habits like taking a warm shower, listening to soft music, shutting your eyes and sitting quiet can help you fall asleep quickly.
Just relax yourself
Activities like progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises and yoga can reduce your tension and relax muscles.
Make your bedroom favourable for sleep
Ensure that the noise in your room is low or none at all, and the temperature neither too low or too high in case you are using an air-conditioner or room heater.
Avoid clock in your bedroom
Constantly looking at a clock can cause stress, reminding you to wake up. In case you are in the habit of waking up in the night, you might find it hard to go back to sleep.
Exercise regularly
While exercising regularly is a good habit, ensure that you don’t exercise close to bedtime as it may interfere with your sleep.
Wake up at the same time every day
Setting a wake-up cycle can immensely benefit you from being able to maintain a healthy sleep pattern.
Try the 20-minute test
After waking up, if you can’t fall back to sleep within 20 minutes, just get out of the bed. Alternatively, go to a different room or engage in quiet activities until you feel sleepy.
Implementing a few changes in your approach to sleeping could help. But even after all these, Insomnia could be a medical condition caused by factors such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome or chronic pain. It could even be the result of a mental health disorder such as depression. To treat Insomnia effectively, it is important to treat one of these conditions. So, if you’ve been having regular sleep problems, we recommend that you see a doctor.
